About

About Me

I’ve always had a love of wildlife and the natural environment, and as a kid I used to snap away with a little Kodak Instamatic camera. But I didn’t really start getting into photography more seriously till my early twenties. I’m totally self-taught, and in those days you learnt from books, magazines and lots of practice!

My first SLR was a Praktica with a 50mm lens, to which I added a Mamiya 600mm lens. I began combining my love of nature and the outdoors with my photography.

This was the pre-digital era when camera controls were manual, it cost money to purchase rolls of film, and then you had to pay again to get the film developed. If you managed to get a couple of really good shots out of a roll of film, you thought you were doing pretty well! But being self-taught, this wasn’t such a bad thing – it made you learn fast. You needed to learn how to compose your shots, use light effectively, and be technically proficient. Over the years I managed to get a little of my work published, did a few weddings, and even learnt how to develop black and white film, which was quite a buzz.

"Anyway, a robbery saw all my gear disappear out the window (literally!)"

Anyway, a robbery saw all my gear disappear out the window (literally) and although I replaced some of it, my photography went by the wayside for many years. But the bug bit again on a trip through south-east Australia in 2013, which I documented with an old Nikon. I was still using film though, and soon found out how hard it was to purchase film and get it developed at the time.

Skip a couple of years till I finally went digital, and I haven’t looked back! While landscape and nature photography are my favourite genres, I like to have a go at anything to improve my skills and there are currently 5 different categories in the Gallery. I hope to expand this even more in the future.

The grounding I had in the use of film was great. But there was, and still is, so much to learn about modern digital equipment and processing methods. It’s great fun and thoroughly enjoyable. I hope this shows through in my work!

About My Photography

I’ve already mentioned that nature photography is my main passion, and capturing the beauty of our amazing landscapes and unique wildlife brings me no end of joy. And while it’s great to specialise in a certain style or genre, I think it’s just as important to experiment and practice with many different subjects and styles. This helps improve the photographer’s overall skills and keeps the creative juices flowing. I doesn’t matter what the subject is – if you can produce an eye-catching image then the buzz is still the same!

My website currently has 5 categories in the Gallery – Australian Landscapes, Australian Fauna, Flora, Black and White Images, and Urban Images. I love trying my hand at all these subjects, and over time I hope to improve my skills enough to add more categories. So have a browse and hopefully you’ll find plenty of images you like.
